    Hello all,

Yes, I am a noob. I did play TSW ages ago, but never really clicked with the mechanics. So, for all practical purposes, consider me a new player.

    Atren is a Level 42 Pistol/Shotgun character.

I really don't know how to set this guy up well. I've managed to bull my way through the solo content, but I know that I'm not doing things properly.

The limited active/passive slots keep bugging me. I need to math out the optimal set, but I can't really get my head around it.

Can someone offer some guidance on good active/passive setups for leveling and such?

At this point, all of the pistol actives are unlocked, as are most of the passives.

Just a few tips and pointers would be welcome. There's a lot of builds on the internets, but most of them are TSW legacy stuff or I'm not understanding them.

    Thanks,
    Mike

My build I find is different than a lot of the advice that's being posted around, it's mainly oriented at dungeons but works fairly well for me soloing (might require a few tweaks for you to like it for soloing but this should at least get you started)

    Active:

    hair Trigger
    Opening Shot
    Unload
    All in
    Controlled shooting
    Raging shot

    Passive:

    Jackpot
    Heavy Caliber Rounds
    Win Streak
    Royal Flush
    Combat Reload

Personally I think that Win Streak and royal flush might be better swapped out for something else during soloing where jackpot might not be the perfect fit for dungeoning (I've recently been experimenting with other passives but don't have enough data yet to tell you what's best)

What I can say is that I keep up in damage just fine for my IP based on dungeon runs that I've done so the build isn't terrible and seems to be comparable or better than most of the builds I've found online thus far but I AM working on trying to improve this since this was my first pis/shotgun build in SWL and I want to see if I can do better so ANY suggestions are very welcome.

Thank you! I'm slowly starting to get a feel for the mechanics of it all. Every build I see gives me more insight. 🙂

    Alright, here goes. I use pistol/shotgun myself. For a solo/leveling/(group)farming I use:
    Actives:
    Seeking Bullet (AoE Filler)
    Unload (MH Spender)
Kill Blind (MH Interrupt/Stun), with Focussed Fire passive (just awesome)
Bullet Ballet (MH Elite (AoE, kills everything))
Raging Shot (OH Spender), with Point Blank Shot passive (moar damage)
Reconstituting Shells (cleanse and heal and refresh ammo), with Fortifying Shells passive (adds armor to group)

2 additional passives are Beginners Luck (just adds pistol damage) and Double Down (adds pistol damage)

This provides good dps, cleanse, interrupt (stun) and healing, great when solo-ing/farming.
Energy Pistol and EnergyHavoc Shotgun are great with this.

Now for (Elite) Dungeons/Lairs/Raids I have been working on a build that looks like this (quite similar to above, but also not so much:)):
    Actives:
Seeking Bullet (AoE Filler), or swap for Hair Trigger for single target (not really that important, won't be used much, see ahead at gear)
    Unload (MH Spender)
Kill Blind (MH Interrupt/Stun), with Focussed Fire passive (just awesome), also applies buff and debuff.
All-In (great single target damage elite), or swap for Bullet Ballet for AoE fights.
    Raging Shot (OH Spender)
Full House, with Stacked Deck passive. Basically a self-buff with chambers on blue for 5 seconds.

There is some controversie about Unload vs. Dual Shot as MH spender.
Unload is better sustained DPS and way better for energy management, hardly have to use filler. Dual shot does more damage and is better for bursting (especially with passive).
I like unload a lot better though, due to energy management and sustaining damage, just trigger it and you have 2.5 secs for moving, which I find important in Elites. For dual shot you'd need an offhand sustained/channeled damage spender, else you run out of energy quick. Since I use Raging Shot as Offhand spender, it combines well with Unload. Also less effortful than Dual Shot imo and can almost contantly keep it up. Also good to keep chambers up (see gear). Have I said I like Unload better yet?

Now gear becomes important. Ashes of Crushed Cities (head)are great due to procs (unload hits 5 times) and Seed of Aggression (neck) and Cold Silver Dice (luck) help with gaining extra energy (again, especially with Unload, it 'does' itsself')
I recently acquired Sov-Tech Harmonizers (Destruction), which are awesome since they upgrade your chamber matches on procs. The more procs the better due to increased chance to upgrade and keep chambers matched.

I am looking into what other passives to go with.
Point Blank shot is ok to increase offhand spender damage, but does not help with keeping chambersmatch up.
Unload passive (Holdout) helps keeping chambersmatch up, so probably using that.
    Beginners Luck adds some dps
Fully Loaded and Fixed Game looks like traps on MainHand.
Heavy Caliber Rounds seems not to be as good as it seems.
Win Streak could be awesome (will test) as it looks like an additional proc and otherwise increases damage on matched chambers.

Will likely go with Hold Out (chance to keep match) and WIn Streak (next to Stacked Deck (must for Full House, longer chamber match), Focussed Fire (must for Kill Blind, guaranteed match) and Double Down (great DPS increase, also helps other pistol users)). My goal is to do sustained dps (can burst a bit with raging shot), get matched chambers and keep them up. Should work wonders with the Harmonizers. Energy should be fine (esp. with high crit) due to seed of aggression and cold silver dice

    Input is appreciated. 🙂

    Gylthas out.

p.s. apologies for amount of text.
