Hi guys, I'm tired of Windows (who isn't?)
I want to switch to Linux but I have some questions...

    1. Can TSW run on Linux?
I came across this www.gwen-morse.com/wiki/index.php/The_Secret_World_on_Linux guide, and this www.reddit.com/r/TheSecretWorld/comments/4ww3wo/minimal_tsw_on_linux_guide_for_the_curiously_geeky/ anyone tried this?
Will I get the same graphics with my Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 TI in Linux as I get in Windows?

    2. What Linux do you recommend?
I have experience with Ubuntu, Gentoo, Mint and CentOS
Most of the guides are for Ubuntu, it is the most user friendly... but is it the most GAME friendly?

    Thanks

You're going to want to ensure you stay away from Enterprise versions of linux for any gaming. CentOS is out as it's mainly for production servers and services rather than the desktop. A better alternative (if you are wanting to use something with yum rather than apt) would be to utilize Fedora Core as a desktop/gaming platform. My suggestion would be to utilize Ubuntu or try out SteamOS. SteamOS is based on Debian and can utilize the repositories that are found there. Ubuntu may be the better option as it's more friendly to the Linux gaming at this particular time. My suggestion would be (prior to swapping away from Windows as a desktop platform) would be to install Virtualbox and then use that to virtualize the OS you're looking to play TSW on. Add that application to the virtual system to see if it plays at all on the Linux distro you choose. If it does play on it then go from there.

I usually experiment using one of my servers and ESXi as a virtualization platform but I doubt you'd want to go that route as the graphic passthrough requirements for video cards is rather small and specific.

    [edit]
As for the graphic performance you'd get from the Nvidia card, that depends on the driver that you have installed. If you are using the neveau driver set: probably not. Install the nVidia drivers from their site if at all possible once you get the system up and stable, prior to installing the game. For right now, ATI seems to have a bit of an edge in Linux due to the Vulcan drivers, though nVidia has their own (closed source) drivers which can be installed.

Thanks for the info, I will try VirtualBox
I do have a VM environment at the office, with 3 ESXI hosts (2 CPU - 6 core and 192G RAM each), but i don't think it will run the game, since they don't have a Graphics Card...

As for SteamOS, is it good also for a day to day OS, or is it only for gaming?

I got Ubuntu with Nvidia driver that comes with CUDA SDK, will it work for the VM environment?

It should be fine for day to day as it's based on the Debian distro so you should be able to use apt to install packages.

In a virtual environment you'd need to be sure the graphic card will be usable in a 'pass through' type of setup. If the card can be detected by the VM then you should be fine otherwise it's going to be quite a chore to get it available.

I'd love to get TSW running on Linux, along with a few other games. Been wanting to make the switch away from Windows entirely for a while, and literally the only thing keeping me on Windows is gaming, which is a large % of what I use my system for. Other software I use is either already native on Linux (Blender, GIMP, Inkscape, LibreOffice, etc), or has a good alternative.

I could do dual-booting, but I tried that for a while. Couldn't stand it.

So, if TSW were to run capably on Linux, that would be a big help toward me making the move.
