Last week we replaced the old cabal site with a completely new one. This has been in the works since early January this year.

The main reasons for a new site:

    • We wanted something a bit more modern and resposive. The old site was very slow to work with.
    • Having full support for mobile and tablets by default. Signing up for an event is just a few button pushes in a mobile browser. The forum us also mobile friendly.
    • Having the ability to create integrations with Discord and possibly the cabal chat itself in the game.
    • Greatly simplify member management for officers.
    • Having greater freedom when it comes to features in general

The current site is little bare bones on the shiny stuff. We have mainly focused on functionality.

We are looking for simple feedback about new new site:

    • Is there anything you find confusing, or was it easy to use on the first visit?
    • Are there any missing features the cabal as a whole would actually use?
    • Do you think the new site is an improvement over the old one?
    • What is positive and/or negative with the new site?

If you have anything else to add outsite these questions, feel free to include it. If you have any specific ideas and suggestions you can make a new thread in the Ideas & Suggestions forum so we can talk about it there. This is not meant to be a discussion thread.

Also feel free to report things in the #web-talk Discord channel or the forum at any time. I'm sure there are bugs somewhere... 😊

I find it a little confusing and annoying trying to find the events from the forums and the top bar links in the forum aren't very intuitive. There are no direct links in the forum page header to take you to event signup. Also, the ODO logo and the Omne Datum Optimum links all take you to the same page as the Threads link (i.e. the forum posts listed newest first). It would seem more logical to me if the ODO logo and the Omne Datum Optimum links actually took you to the Home page, not the Threads page. Basically, I have the forums bookmarked, and if I go directly to the forums using this bookmark, it's a dead end that doesn't lead me back to the ODO homepage.

Also, I'm not sure if this is intentional or not, but there's a notification in the top right corner that says I have "unread private threads" but when I click on it, the page it takes me to says I have no unread private threads. However the notification doesn't go away.

YES, PLEASE. I agree, moving back and forth between the main site and the forums is really a lacking feature atm. Or rather, moving back and forth between forums and the tabs that are on the main site. It'd be great to be able to go to Events directly from the forums, maybe even Applications (on the admin side). It's not a complete dealbreaker, but it's just a little annoying atm. Or if we don't want to bother with the separate tabs, then just having the ODO link to main page would do the trick and also make a tad more sense. (I think I posted something along those lines in the "suggestions for website" thread, too, but repeating it here, since you asked)

We embedded the forum as a quick fix for now: omnedatumoptimum.red/forum

This is exactly how the old site also solved the problem.

The header will then look like this:

I agree that it's important to be able to move easily from forums to the other pages on the site. I would point out that if you start from https://omnedatumoptimum.red/ rather than https://forums.omnedatumoptimum.red then you should find the forums embedded in the page, with the main site's link bar present at the top of the page, giving you access to events etc.

I also found out that some events (namely E5 NYR events) don't let me sign up with any other character than Explosia, perhaps this is intended but if it isn't, would be nice to have a solution for that.

EDIT: This was a bug. Fixed now. Thanks for reporting!

Also, it seems after signing off from an event, there is no option to re-sign up with a different character. It locks your currently selected character and lets you either sign up or sign off with it, doesn't let you change roles either.

It's on the list of things to improve in the future. If this is a more urgent issue, don't hesitate to speak up, but I would guess event organisers are flexible enough to sort this out.

Can’t figure out how to upload picture for avatar... avatar didn’t transfer from website. Otherwise, things are working good.

It's in your profile menu (upper right corner). The max file size is 4MB and it doesn't seem to be an obvious way to change that at the moment

@Alphabethead Increased file size limit for avatars to 20MB. This should make it easier to upload avatars from mobile and tablets were scaling tools are not easily available.

I think we briefly talked about this in webmin, but just came to mind again when I was reviewing the recruitment script to replace the link and whatnot - About ODO, Charter and Community Standards should be available on the front page on a separate "About ODO" tab. I know they're currently on the forums, but that's not very intuitive for people looking for general info to go to, especially since the default view that loads up is threads, listing more recent threads, and especially especially since even if you open up the Categories view, they're buried in "Member Information" - new applicant or someone just curious who's not a member would probably not think to check there. Point being, info material is currently totally safe. No one will ever find it :P

Those are linked directly in the application. I guess having a separate "About ODO" page is not a bad idea anyway with some intro text and a link to relevant threads.

We can also chose if the forum should display recent threads or the categories by default.

I know that they're linked in the app, but maybe some people would like to have that information before they click "create application". :D I personally have never applied for a job or anything else before knowing what it is.

Ooh, and categories by default would look a tad more organized.

  • May 23, 2018, 2:38 p.m.

Yup, so an "About Us" page with some basic information about the cabal and links to relevant threads such as community standard and charter makes sense. I've started on making those configurable, so they can automatically be included there.

  • May 23, 2018, 2:54 p.m.

We actually have an About ODO text (it used to be on a separate page and is currently a separate thread). Could copy that text on a separate page and then link to Charter and CS.
